Kompassen Brooch

This wooden brooch was inspired by the British Library’s recent Maps exhibition and a design in the 1889 edition of ‘Menniskan’, originally published by Swedish scientist Nils Lilja in 1858. Translated, the full title is, ‘Man; Her origins, her life and her destiny. Considered from a natural history point of view’. This illustration accompanies a section on the history of seafaring nations and invention of the compass.

This historical image that inspired this piece has been made freely available by the British Library. Find the original artwork at https://goo.gl/D5Ndej and the book it’s taken from at http://access.bl.uk/item/pdf/lsidyv36607d8e

I have made only minor edits to the original artwork to transform it into a wearable piece of the past.

This badge is made of 4mm thick Maple-veneer wood, measuring 2×2 inches and weighing ~6g.

The brooch comes with a card depicting the original artwork that inspired it and the mini art history lesson.

If you’re ordering this as a gift, let me know and I can wrap items individually or include a message for you!
